HE Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Sultan bin Saad Al Muraikhi has stressed Qatar's keenness on pushing forward the wheel of development in Afghanistan in order to achieve security and stability in the country.
The minister announced a Qatari donation of $10 million to help in achieving prosperity and peace in Afghanistan, $6 million of which are to be directed to printing school curricula, with the remaining $4 million to go into supporting development projects.
HE Al Muraikhi was speaking during his participation in the Brussels Conference on Afghanistan, which is organized by the EU in partnership with the Afghani government in the presence of a wide attendance from more than 70 countries and 25 international organizations.
He said that Qatar was committed throughout the past 12 years to provide political and financial support to Afghanistan, offering $56.5 million in the form of in-kind and humanitarian aid as well as donations to organizations and entities.
The minister highlighted Qatar's political support to Afghanistan by mediating between Afghani factions in order to reach peace and stability in the country and the region. He pointed to Qatar's hosting of the national dialogue between Taliban movement and some prominent figures in the Afghani arena as well as international personalities over two years as recent as January 2016.
HE Al Muraikhi voiced Qatar's praise of the Afghani government's efforts and its commitment to the reform program that addresses national priorities, expressing Qatar's welcoming of the steps taken by the government on the political, security, economic and financial fronts to help the country move forward to handle the national and regional challenges.
He reiterated Qatar's call for a peaceful solution and dialogue towards a comprehensive political process that ends violence and brings peace to the country.
The minister of state for foreign affairs expressed hope that the conference will result in tangible outcome that helps in the progress and construction of the country, and supporting the rights of its people in building their own future and achieving their ambitions.
